Galena is the solo project of Billy Sprague, Originally issued last year as a cassette release on Sanity Muffin. Grave News For You received rave reviews and a beckoning call for vinyl & CD release. S/M now offers a limited edition of 300 special expanded edition on LP & CD for the first time.
Utilizing analog synths, vintage drum machines, baritone guitar, space echo treated vocals and tape loops, Sprague creates a dark textural landscape with throbbing dynamics and distorted shimmering interludes. Bursts of wet synth and saturated guitar lines guide you along sonorous white noise snow storms. Vocals appear like inner thoughts dictating the listeners next navigation.

Galena unravels a naive exploration of nostalgia, grief and affection through an array of tactfully presented sounds. Immersive yet carefully controlled distorted washes brings to mind influences of Flying Saucer Attack sharing his 4-Track with Cold Cave. Fans of the Vinyl on Demand label issuing early 80s minimal synth and experimental works will find this release a refreshing new expansion upon those lost and found sounds.

Completed just before the recent European tour with Nadja, Through Veils is similar to the recent collab LP “Konstruktion” done w/ Nadja and recorded during the same sessions. Dark brooning synth lines, slow progression-fast strummed-black metal-esque tinted layers of baritone guitar wash augmented with creepy leads. Live floortom blast beats are found on the starting and end tracks but mostly this material is beatless. The mood is expansive, dark, and hauntingly melodic. Vocals are sparse, buried and used more like an instrument in providing additional density.  Limited to 100 copies, most sold on tour but few still left here.*Dedicated in title and spirit to friend and Port Said synth player Stefan Tischler (RIP)

“Shouldn’t take more than a minute or so before you’re sucked in, after some swirling ambience, a strange rifflike highend drone loops and loops, and then suddenly everything explodes in a frenzy of what can only be described as electronic black buzz, a churning bit of melody looped beneath sheets of hiss and buzz and thrum, with what sounds like a super distorted blast beat laid over the top, the result is fantastically psychedelic and hypnotic. even as the blast beat and buzz fades, the ensuing highends shimmer and the thick layered crunch continues to invoke the same sort of grim vibe, except here, Galena lays some lilting warped melodies over the top. so it almost sounds like a Philip Jeck installation gone haywire, a wild tangle of woozy synths over a thick swirl of Our Love Will Destroy The World like skree, and that’s just the first track! The rest of the tape plays out similarly though, taking black metal buzzy riffs and transforming them into something much more washed out and psychedelic. the various elements seem to ooze, bleed and melt before our ears. sometimes building to crushing cacophonies, other times smoothed out into a sort of almost Pop Ambient prismatic mesmer. A murky, drifty bit of ambient buzz and blurred blackened swirl that definitely has us wanting to hear more”

2nd tape album on S/M by Oakland’s Naked Lights. charged in heavy rhythm led by bass, drums and added metal junk percussion, NL propel forward with an onslaught of honed energy. shimmering synth lines and controlled spastic guitar injections interweave w/ drum machine patterns and hidden vocals.  a must see live and awesome 2nd album! for fans of Wire, Savage Republic and early Human League. A house favorite & highly recommended, few copies left!

Perpeteia – Music for Mesmer

With their sophomore release for Sanity Muffin, Music for Mesmer is a meditation upon the enchanting research of the German mystic-physician Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), who’s theory of animal magnetism described a natural energetic transference that occurred between all animated and inanimate objects. Brimming with hallucinatory swirls of ineffable guitar tones gliding smoothly over and through chimerical Wurlitzer finger shimmers and aberrant field recordings, the phantasmagorical cadence of this velvety sonic mass flows over the listener like waves of saccharine reverie, filling one’s sensorial chambers with ameliorating amniotic fluids and tickling and trickling lysergic palpitations from deep guttural depths to the most elevated pastoral headspace. Two years in the making, this album flickers cognizance and reorients the plenum of experience.
